Port Hills Red Zone

Following the Canterbury Earthquakes in 2010/2011 Protranz carried out a large number of extremely dangerous cliff top demolitions in the Port Hills Residential Red Zone, specifically in the Sunmer & Redcliffs area of Christchurch. Access to demolish these properties was highly restricted by the NZ Government due to the Geotechnical Risk posed by the large fractures in the cliffs, which these properties were positioned on. The properties were architecturally designed, often constructed with concrete & steel composite structure, with a significant amount of polystyrene insulation, which added to the environmental issues we faced on the hill top. We designed and built four remote controlled excavators with custom made arm extensions to demolish the buildings and the team onsite worked closely with the Geotechnical engineers & land surveyors to complete the work safely for our clients. Protranz won the World Demolition Award in 2015 for Innovation for the utilisation of remote controlled excavators in such high risk situations.
