    14 Kinsey Terrace

14 Kinsey Terrace

This property was iconic amongst Port Hills Residential Red Zoned properties damaged in the Canterbury Earthquakes, and was photographed and filmed many times before finally being demolished in January and February 2015. A portion of the house and foundation could be seen from the Main Road below driving into Sumner from behind the containers. We faced similar challenges to that encountered on 8 Kinsey Terrace, however, this demolition was carried out under more urgent conditions due to the deterioration of the structure and concerns that material would begin to impact on the road users below. Due to the success on 8 Kinsey Terrace we chose to adopt the same demolition technique, using two remote controlled excavators. However, the sequence was significantly more complicated this time due to the size and architecture of the property. We worked closely with the CERA Engineering Team to come up with the most appropriate demolition sequence and operate on the cliff edge using the remote diggers on the cliff top safely. Due to the restricted vantage points onsite we employed the use of a cherry picker for the operator to be in whilst breaking out the very thick concrete slab on the cliff edge, this was the first time any technique of this nature had been used.
